The Proper Way to Read the Basmalah Between Two Surahs
When reading the Qur'an and reaching the end of a surah and about to continue to the beginning of another surah, there are four methods. Three are permissible, and one is not. The three permissible methods are as follows:
(Cutting everything)
This means reading the end of the surah, the Basmalah, and the beginning of the next surah separately, without connecting them. For example:
Fī jīdihā ḥablum mim masad (stop) Bismillāhir Raḥmānir Raḥīm (stop) Idzā jā’a nashrullāhi wal-fath...
(Connecting everything)
This means reading the end of the surah, the Basmalah, and the beginning of the next surah directly and without pause, connecting them all. For example:
Lakum dīnukum waliyadīni Bismillāhir Raḥmānir Raḥīmi Innā a’ṭhaināka kautsar...
(Cut the first and connect the second with the third)
This means reading the end of the surah and stopping, then reading the Basmalah and the beginning of the next surah while connecting them. For example
Wayamna’ūnal-mā’ūn (stop) Bismillāhir Raḥmānir Raḥīmi Li’īlāfi Quraisy...
(Connecting the first with the second, and cutting the third), this method means reading the end of the surah and the Basmalah together, then stopping and reading the next surah separately. This method is not allowed because the Basmalah is not considered the end of the surah and to avoid any misconception that the Basmalah is part of the end of the surah.
